Fun Stuff: too much snow

Posted on February 6, 2010

Ok… for someone who still thinks like a 4th grader, there is no such thing as too much snow. Being snowed in lets me forget about my diet (why, I’m not sure but it works for me), and spend all day editing pictures. Watching the snow come down, and down… and down this weekend sitting at my desk with a cup of hot tea has been perfection. I’m plowing through (yes, pun intended) a lot of collections and preparing DVD’s for delivery. But, I live with a crazy man and my even crazier brother is staying with us for the weekend (because he got snowed in). So, I was told I had to step away from the computer, put on my play clothes and go outside. We did, and I brought my camera. Here are some images of our little apartment complex covered in snow.

I can never decide which season is my favorite, but today it’s winter.

First Installment, About me: Fur Babies

Posted on January 28, 2010

Since I started this blogsite, I’ve focused on showing you all my work and style of photography. I’ve posted several engagement shoots, some family shoots, a maternity session, and my first wedding. But I want this blogsite to be about more than just my pictures, I want you to get to know me too! When it comes to who you choose to be your wedding photographer… you want to make sure you trust that person. Trust leads to comfort, and comfort leads to great pictures. To achieve that level of trust you have to get to know who that person is behind the camera. I’m going to make sure I post more about who I am, things I love, hobbies, adventures, daily life, pet peeves, pets, family, and any other aspect of myself I can share with you. Hopefully, you (internet friends) will start to put a person with the pictures.

First installment: Fur Babies

Dave, my fiance (you’ll learn more about him later) and I have 4 cats. Yep, we live in a one bedroom apartment with 4 incredibly clean cats.

I’m a cat person, who grew up on an old tobacco farm. Cats grow like blackberries down there in Bryantown, MD and I’m a sucker for a sweet baby kitten who needs a warm blanket and a taste of tuna fish from a can.

Two summers ago we were at a 4th of July picnic with the family down in the county. We were outside and heard something crying in the woods. So I went to see what it was. In the bushes we found 4 baby kittens, about 2 weeks old, crying in a puddle of rain water. I hesitated for maybe 8 seconds, looked at Dave without a word, then gave in and reached down to pile the poor things into my jacket. We brought them inside, and took a look. I promised they’d go straight to the shelter the next day, and we made a quick run to Safeway to pick up some kitten formula and baby kitten bottles. (yes… they make those).

They never made it to the shelter. They are our fur babies (no laughing). They sleep in our bathroom at night. The tub is their bed, and yes, we put blankets in at night for them to sleep on. We’re the proud parents of 3 girls and a boy. I’m officially that crazy cat lady, who just happens to be in her mid 20’s and (almost) married. So I didn’t get the bad end of the deal here. Layla, Duffy, Piper and Chase who we just call “The Boy” are their names. We’re pretty much set, and don’t see ourselves needing anymore pets until real human babies come along.

looks like a bad 1970’s portrait…

Update: Baby Carson

Posted on January 23, 2010

A few months back, I posted some photos from a maternity session I did with a childhood friend of mine. Tricia and CJ were expecting their baby boy at the time. Baby Carson was born around the new year and I’m happy to report mom, baby and the rest of the family are all doing very well. Although I am a few weeks late, I wanted to send my best wishes to the family by posting a few shots from the maternity session that didn’t make it into the first posting. Every time I look back on a collection of photographs, I always find one or two that I never really noticed the time before. Here are some of my most recent “finds” from Tricia’s maternity session.

Congrats to Tricia, CJ, and big sisters Alyssa and Payton. Welcome to the world baby Carson!

Wedding: Josh and Emily

Posted on January 18, 2010

It is with great excitement, much appreciation, and a few nerves that I write this post. On January 2nd, 2010 Josh and Emily rang in the New Year by joining in marriage. The two said their vows in a gorgeous church in Bethesda, MD. Emily was stunning, and shockingly calm. She truly enjoyed every moment of her wedding day. Never once did I notice her flustered, rushed, or anything other than just plain happy. She set the bar very high for Brides everywhere. Josh was also just as relaxed, with only a few moments of heartwarming nervousness. He was borderline giddy prior to the start of the wedding, when we stole away for a few photos of Josh as the sun went down.

The wedding itself was very special, and really spoke of who this couple is, and what they believe in. I of course cried, like a baby actually. Especially when the entire church was asked to join in the chorus of “Joyful Joyful”. After the ceremony we took a few minutes to capture some shots of Josh and Emily as they prepared for their big entrance to the reception, all the while slowly realizing what had just taken place. Some of my favorite shots come from these few moments.

I have to say thank you to so many people who helped me get to this point… The couple who trusted me and provided me with the opportunity to show the world what I can do with my camera. My family, who have supported me with encouragement and love through every adventure I’ve decided to take on. My friends and everyone who has said such kind words about my pictures. And my sweet fiance, who is truly the love of my life and the man of my dreams… I am lucky to have you. You are already my partner. (And by the way you’re a fantastic second photographer, thanks for keeping me calm!). I can’t wait to keep going, and see how much better every wedding becomes. To my future Brides and Grooms… I look forward to crying at your weddings too!

Wow… I’m a lucky girl.

Now, on to Josh and Emily’s wedding pictures…

Engagement: LaJuane and Kenny

Posted on January 4, 2010

LaJuane and Kenny got together with Dave and I for an engagement shoot this past weekend. In fact, we met up on a cold (I mean cold) New Year’s Day. I can think of no better way to start off the new year then by photographing such a fun, yet laid back couple in love. 2010 is the year of their wedding, and I know the big day can’t get here fast enough for these two. I’m sad to say that I am already photographing another wedding on their special day, so I won’t be able to be a part of it. I’m sure though on their wedding day LaJuane will be glowing and Kenny will be just as stunning. Dave and I wish all the best to this wonderful couple.

Engagement: Emily and Scott

Posted on January 2, 2010

Emily and Scott met in Cincinnati, Ohio where the two were attending  college together. They are now close to completing their final year in grad school where they’ve been working to become Rabbis. Emily contacted me a couple of months back, right around the time Scott popped the question. We set up an engagement session to capture this part of their new life together.

Emily and Scott are two extremely down to earth, funny, gorgeous and very much in love individuals. My own fiancé, Dave, joined us as a second photographer on this day. We all walked around Old Town and naturally Dave and Scott talked about “boy things” while Emily and I chatted about our upcoming June weddings. Come to find out… Emily is a girl after my own heart. She too will be using yellow flowers in her wedding, and having her younger brother as her Man of Honor. Scott will also break tradition and honor his sister as his Best Woman.

A big thank you to Emily and Scott for laughing at our jokes today, and giving us such beautiful moments to turn into photos. Here’s to honoring old traditions and making new ones! Congrats to the happy couple!

Engagement Session: Josh and Emily

Posted on December 14, 2009

This is why I love being a wedding photographer… spending a Sunday afternoon walking around the Torpedo Factory with an awesome couple, chatting, getting to know each other, laughing and having a blast. Josh and Emily have a wonderfully fun spirit about them. We found some really neat spots inside the factory, and then opened up the umbrella for a stroll outside. I was a little worried the rainy day wouldn’t give us very nice shots, but now my new favorite thing is a couple under an umbrella. These two were friends for 7 years before Josh “made it out of the friend zone” and the two became a couple. They were engaged this October and will be married on January 2, 2010. They will also be the first official Maggie Mudd Photography wedding! I hope I am always so lucky, to work with couples like Josh and Emily.

Congrats to the happy couple! I can’t wait for your wedding…

Family Session: The Kanes

Posted on December 7, 2009

Today I had the pleasure of photographing a friend of mine and the rest of her crew. Jennifer, her husband, and their two little ones met up with me for a short photo shoot to try and get in a Christmas Card worthy picture. Although it was a chilly day, and our feet were soaked through with melting snow and mud, The Kanes and I had a great time. I think we got in a few good ones too! My favorite part of the day was when Colin tried to steal Ella’s candy cane. Jennifer would ask Ella to give her brother a kiss, then Ella would say “but he’ll take my candy!”. Poor girl, I know how she feels.

Thanks to Jennifer for being so supportive of my work! Hope you enjoy!

The Love Bird Sessions: A Valentine’s Day photo session special event

Posted on December 4, 2009

The Love Bird Sessions

A Valentine’s Day special

for couples in love…

This Valentine’s Day, instead of spending too much money on a dinner and a bottle of wine in a stuffy restaurant, spend an hour with Maggie Mudd Photography workin’ it for the camera with your sweetheart! The Love Bird Sessions are being offered in mini format for this special photo session event. Anyone in love (or in like) can sign up for a session time slot. Dating couples, high school sweethearts, engaged couples, married couples, golden anniversary couples… anyone who would call themselves “love birds” is invited to be photographed in Old Town Alexandria.

How it works:

Mini Love Bird sessions will last 45 to 50 minutes and cost $75. Couples will receive by email the top ten photos from the session in High res files. The photos are yours to keep, share, print, post to facebook or use as your computer desktop background. Maggie Mudd will “set up shop” so to speak in Old Town Alexandria. A pre-determined route for the photo session will take the 3 of us around Old Town, stopping at some of the more romantic spots for great photos. We’ll end up back at our first location! From there, go pick up that bottle of wine for half the price the restaurants charge and go snuggle up on the sofa while watching a romantic comedy, knowing you’ve invested in something more than an overcooked steak.

When:

Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14 2010.

Session times will be between 11am and 2pm, the last session starting at 2pm. This means there are only 8 slots total for this event… so email Maggie directly now to save your slot! Payment in full is required to secure your photo session slot.

Spotlight on Maggie Mudd Photography: Featured in the DC Craft Mafia’s blog

Posted on December 3, 2009

A couple of weeks back, I was asked to “work the room” so to speak for the DC Craft Mafia’s Holiday Heist craft show held at the Soundry in Vienna, VA. I had an awesome time roaming around snapping shots of some really cool people sharing and selling their amazing crafts and art. The place was packed with interested customers and fellow crafters all day. They even held workshops for folks to sit down, and try some things out themselves. A sewing workshop and a paper bead workshop were two of my favorites! The work these crafters do is outstanding. I encourage everyone to check out the DC Craft Mafia’s blog. Look through all the featured vendors on the site and do your Christmas shopping a little bit different this year!

Here’s some more about the Mafia…”The DC Craft Mafia is a diverse group of indie crafters and proud to be a chapter of the world-wide Craft Mafia. Our goal is to bring craftiness to the capital masses through workshops, craft shows and community outreach.” Visit them at http://dccraftmafia.blogspot.com/

Here’s what they had to say about MMP… -”Her work is beautiful and she almost effortlessly brings a warm and inviting atmosphere to her subjects.” -”Jane of all Trades” (I’m blushing, thanks Vanessa!)

These are some of the photos I took at the event. Thank you to everyone over at the Mafia for allowing me to be a part of such an awesome show.
